Flip Flop Wanderer has a goal.

That goal is to show you how easy it is to get outdoors and enjoy nature and everything it has to offer. I want to show you breathtaking and fun places for you to pack up and get out and visit.  I want to show you the gear you will need.  I’m going to be showing you things that you can cook while you are outdoors.

My name is Greg Berndt and I’m the creator of Flip Flop Wanderer. I’ve been doing outdoor activities for most of my life. My lust for adventure led me to start traveling in August 2015 and I would share my journeys on my Facebook. Soon, I was getting comments and messages from people telling me that I should do this full-time! That’s where this blog comes into play. I enjoy doing anything outdoors and I’m always looking for new adventures.  If you have any awesome trips that you have taken, I would love to hear about it!

And that’s how Flip Flop Wanderer Began.

I grew up in a very small town in southern Illinois. The town is called Red Bud and no, it isn’t the same town from the Chevy Chase movie called Funny Farm. But that hasn’t stopped a lot of people from asking me about it. Here’s a small clip if you haven’t seen the movie (get ready to laugh!):  Funny Farm – Hey Mack which way to Red Bud

When I was a young boy, I grew up in the country and I would go out into the woods to play.  I would head down to the creek and look for arrowheads and just have fun out in nature.  I have always loved being outside, but it wasn’t until I moved to California in April 2010 that I started to get outdoors and into nature as much as I could.  I remember wanting to take my kids on a camping trip and I thought I should probably go myself the first time because camping in California was different than how it was when I grew up.

When I grew up we would just go out into someone’s fields and go into the woods.  It was great. If you needed wood, you would just look around and burn it.  But in Cali, it was totally different.  You had to buy the wood, you couldn’t just burn it anywhere. You have to use a fire pit to burn the firewood.  And then there are those times when even if you have all of that it might be fire season and they still won’t allow you to burn.  (Which we found out during a camping trip to Big Bear when it was just a little cold.) Experiences like these have shown me that each adventure is unique and calls for different kinds of preparation. On this blog, I’ll be sharing my experiences to help you navigate each unique journey and give you everything you need to know!
